The finish on all the products is a standard industrial catalyzed lacquer. A pre-catalyzed lacquer topcoat is used on table tops, desks, conference tables. The majority of our customers prefer our catalyzed lacquer finish. This lacquer provides a hard, durable, long lasting finish that resists most household stain hazards such as water and other condiments.

What is the finishing process?

  1. After several sanding operations, the piece is fine sanded and any sharp edges softened.
  2. Stain is applied to the piece using the spray gun and hand wiping.
  3. A sealer coat is then applied to the piece.
  4. Light “scuff” sanding prepares the surface for good adhesion.
  5. Catalyzed lacquer is applied using an air assisted gun (an air assisted gun will enable the most catalyzed lacquer deposited on the piece with minimal over spray.)
  6. After drying, the piece is buffed with an hand held air buffer and mineral oil. The buffer fills the small pours in the wood surface and toughens the surface.
  7. The piece is then wiped dry and reworked if necessary for a uniform luster.

* Steps 4-7 are repeated to obtain a finish that is soft to the touch, yet hard, and capable of withstanding years of use.

What is the staining process?
This process is quite extensive and is only applied by experienced craftsmen. We believe our process is worth the cost because the finished furniture is pleasing to the hand yet strong and durable for withstanding years of use. In addition to our standard finish, we can hand oil our pieces. Danish watco oil provides a more natural appearance but is less protective than the catalyzed lacquer finish. This oil finish needs yearly maintenance by reapplying oil to all visible parts of the furniture. Spectra Wood will stain American Black Cherry darker if the customer prefers. Solid wood has many natural variations which causes slight variations in the appearance of the stain. We have several different stains but please keep in mind that matching stains of existing furniture is very difficult because of the aging process wood goes through, stains may vary in accordance with different wood types, and that we use stains that are exclusively manufactured for Spectra Wood according to our own specifications.
