History People Workmanship FAQs

Spectra Wood began as a hobby in our basement workshop of our family home more than thirty- five years ago. We used the basic woodworking tools to make cutting boards, chessboards, knife blocks, candleholders and other small wooden items. This experience led to more tinkering in the basement and more involvement from other family members. It also led to more customer interest and new orders. While our orders came in and our backlog grew, my father resigned from the University and decided to give the business his full attention.

We purchased more sophisticated tools and woodworking machinery at auctions and local craftspeople were hired to help us manufacture wooden giftware. As we were able to acquire more sophisticated woodworking equipment, we were able to increase our product line and our customer base as well. We began to produce small furniture pieces with much success and decided to continue in this new area.

Today, seventy craftspeople in over 90,000 square feet of manufacturing space, produce office furniture and library furniture for colleges, universities, businesses, and home furnishings distributed directly to retailers and mail order catalogs throughout the country.

My parents are still very much involved in the business that they created over thirty- five years ago. My husband and I are happy to join them in its daily operations. As we continue to grow our business, we have invested a tremendous amount of time, energy, and money towards new equipment and technology that will enable us to meet our demands yet not lose the attention to detail and quality workmanship that Spectra Wood's reputation is built on. We are very excited to continue this family tradition and to be part of Spectra Wood's growth and continued success in the years to come.
